Formerly known as Shandong University Hall founded in 1901, Shandong University is regarded as the originating university of modern Chinese higher education. As a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education, Shandong University successfully stepped into the ranks of the world's top universities (Class A) in 2017. The university covers a total area of more than 8,000 mu and has formed a school-running pattern of one university and three locations (Jinan, Weihai and Qingdao), with 44 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degree, 1 second-level discipline authorized for doctoral degree, 51 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degree, 93 undergraduate enrollment majors and 42 postdoctoral research stations. The university has nearly 70,000 students and 4,600 full-time teachers, and has signed inter-university cooperation agreements with more than 200 universities in more than 30 countries and regions.

Shandong University Qingdao Campus is an innovative campus that leads the academic forefront, an international campus that is fully open to education, and a demonstration campus that deepens comprehensive reform set up by Shandong University in Qingdao. As a governing unit of the China-Shanghai Cooperation Organization Economic and Trade Institution, Shandong University vigorously promotes exchanges and cooperation with universities in SCO countries. At present, a total of 293 international students from SCO countries are participating in course learning online or offline, with over 40 students in the Qingdao campus, the majority of whom are at the graduate level.
